Tyrian Lodge No. 333, chartered on October 2, 1860, in Springfield, Illinois. Rochester Lodge, No. 635, was chartered in Rochester, Illinois. On August 9th, 2022, through the adoption of the appropriate motions in both Lodges and with the consent of the Grand Master of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois, in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the jurisdiction, both Lodges consolidated under Tyrian's charter.
While Rochester Lodge No. 635 may have surrendered its charter as part of the consolidation, its history and tradition both carry on as part of our mutual Lodge. Tyrian Lodge No. 333 is proud to uphold the legacy of that venerable institution, and have made Rochester its new home. Together, the Brethren of both Lodges are working hard to spread the cement of a new Lodge.
Below is the story of two separate Lodges, both of whom now walk together towards a shared future.
Tyrian Lodge was organized under dispensation on November 10, 1859 and on October 2, 1860 was constituted by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, in the presence of the Grand Lodge, as Tryian Lodge No. 333 A.F. & A.M. The officers installed at that time were Orlin H. Miner, Worshipful Master; Harman G. Reynolds, Senior Warden; Charles D. Coon, Junior Warden; John S. Bradford, Treasurer; Eugene L. Gross, Secretary; Rhuena D. Lawrence, Senior Deacon; and George R. Teasdale, Junior Deacon.
The first meeting place was on the third floor of a building situated on the northeast corner of Fifth and Monroe Streets in Springfield, where Springfield Lodge No. 4 and Central Lodge No. 71 also met.
While working under dispensation, five candidates were initiated, four were passed and four were raised. Those raised were George R. Teasdale, William Billington, Walter C. Whitney, and Peter M. Pitcher, all of whom joined in the petition for a charter, one being installed as Junior Deacon. By August 31, 1865 this little band of ten had grown to fifty-two.
On February 22, 1871, the Lodge hall was damaged by fire and the meeting place was then moved to the third floor of the building on the northeast corner of Sixth and Monroe Streets, where it remained until 1908. Tyrian Lodge then moved to the new building and present location at 420 South Sixth Street. In April 1960 an extensive building and remodeling program was initiated and on April 25, 1962 the building as it appears today was dedicated.
During the time from mid-May to mid-October 1961, while the temple was closed for remodeling, Tyrian Lodge under dispensation from the Grand Lodge held meetings at the Masonic Temple in Rochester, Illinois.
Throughout the years, several members of Tyrian Lodge have been active in the Grand Lodge. The records show that Harman G. Reynolds was Grand Secretary from 1851 to 1868 and Grand Master from 1869 to 1870. Orlin H. Miner was Grand Secretary from 1868 to 1873; John C. Reynolds was Deputy Grand Secretary from 1863 to 1871; John F. Burrill was Grand Marshal in 1870, and Deputy Grand Secretay form 1871 to 1872, and Grand Secretary from 1873 to 1881; Frank Hudson, Jr., was Deputy Grand Secretary from 1873 to 1881; James E. Jeffers was Grand Marshal from 1929 to 1930, was a member of the Board of Grand Examiners in 1912 and was chairman in 1924.
Hal C. McLoud served on the Board of Grand Examiners from 1924 through 1926, was Junior Grand Warden from 1931 to 1933, Deputy Grand Master from 1933 to 1935 and Grand Master from 1935 to 1937.
Myron K. Lingle was Junior Grand Warden from 1959 to 1961, Senior Grand Wrden from 1961 to 1963, Deputy Grand Master from 1961 to 1965 and Grand Master from 1961 to 1967. Bro. Lingle had, before his election to the Grand Lodge line, been a member of the Board of Grand Examiners.
Norman R. Buecker was appointed to the Board of Grand Examiners in 1968 and served on the Board until his election as Junior Grand Warden in 1973. He was elected Senior Grand Wardern in 1975, Deputry Grand Master in 1977, and served as Grand Master from 1979 to 1981. Bro. Buecker was elected Grand Treasurer in 1981 and is presently serving in that capacity.
Laurence J. Van Nattan was Grand Steward from 1963 to 1965. Earle W. Ludwig was Grand Pursuivant from 1965 to 1967. Milton D. Dirst has been serving as the Grand Marshal since 1979 until his time. Clyde W. Wilkey served as Grand Steward from 1977 to 1979 and as Junior Grand Deacon from 1979 to 1981.
Tyrian Lodge members have served on various Grand Lodge committees thru the years. Rhuena D. Lawrence, Charles W. Proty, Frank Hudson, Jr., Hal C. McLoud, Myron K. Lingle, Laurence J. Van Nattan, Earle W. Ludwig, Lloyd A. Springer, and Norman R. Buecker served as District Deputy Grand Masters. Wendell E. Walch was appointed Grand Representative to Manitoba from 2004 to 2005, and chairman of the Masonic Academic Bowl committee.
The record of officers who have served Tyrian Lodge is complete except for the period between 1865 and 1871. The fire here-to-fore mentioned in 1871 destroyed all the Lodge records. The Grand Lodge records were destroyed in the same fire.
In 2021, Tyrian Lodge No. 333 relocated to the Rochester Masonic Center in Rochester, Illinois, taking up permanent residence outside of Springfield, Illinois, for the first time in over 160 years. A year later, on August 9th, 2022, Rochester Lodge No. 635 consolidated with Tyrian Lodge No. 333's charter, the first consolidation to occur for either Lodge in their long histories.
In December, 2024, Wendell Walch retired as Secretary of Tyrian Lodge No. 333, having served forty years in the office.
